    26 vs 45.5

Post by jimbop54 on Sat Mar 25, 2017 5:50 pm

I'm trying to decide between the 26 and 45.5.

I play upright bass in a couple of jazz bands. Both are fairly quiet groups playing restaurants and small clubs, but I would like to be prepared for larger venues. Typically no PA support.

I rarely play electric bass on gigs, but if I do it would be a 5-string. I do own an Fdeck HPF.

Amplification chain is a Full Circle > Headway EDB-2 > Power Amp > Cab.

Generally I prefer my cab on a chair or stool to hear myself better.

What are your thoughts and recommendations?

    Thanks,
    Jim D

I'll drop Mike a note to check in. He's running like a madman to get ready for a european show.

    Hi
I'd recommend the 26. The 45.5 is a bit better for upright but not for 5 string. Even with the Fdeck you can bottom out the 5's on a B string. The resonant frequency of the 45.5 is a bit higher. Great down to an open E but it will struggle with the B string.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but I think its a bit in line.  How about two 16 cabs so you have the option of one or two? How would two 16s compare to one 26, all other tings being equal?

Oh I'm new here, amateur electric bass for over 30 years on and off, and trying to transition to upright before I retire in 3 years.

I really feel that the combination of two MAS16's is the hot ticket. It goes the same volume (maybe a bit louder) than the 45.5. The 6" based cabs are better for electric bass. With two of 'em you can put one on the floor and elevate the other---and many other things. I'll get a picture of the nice padded bag w/shoulder strap.Personally, unless I was using it elevated for PA use---I think that two of the 16's sound as good or better than the 26.
