    HPF and Bass Contour Box

Post by mikearnopol on Tue Sep 10, 2013 7:26 pm

We're working on a small box (like Fdeck's or the MXR's) that includes a high pass filter to remove subsonic junk (very useful) and a bass contour control which can bring down the upper bass/ lower mid region.

As the volume reaches the fart-out point the Big E cabs can get a bit warmer in the upper bass /lower mid region. I happen to like it since I'm more of a funk/R&B/fusion guy, but if you're looking for a flatter "piano wire" sound it can be too thick in that region.

So this box will have a variable control where you can take a little to a lot out.

Preliminary tests show that this works very well in getting a very flat to warn response.

It will be battery or wall wart powered and use the highest quality components.

Good idea! How about adding a switchable low pass/ speaker sim. too? Sometimes its nice to emulate a full range tweeterless cab. 1x15 or 8x10 sound in the top end, for instance. Just a thought...

Would it be possible to make the -3dB point 30Hz ? or maybe selectable ?

These are all good and interesting suggestions all of which could be done. There may be a cost component. What would y'all consider a fair price point for such a device?

Good question. I may be optimistic but 100 to 150 seems fair but I can understand why it could be higher.

I have no idea what something like this would cost. I must say though, that the fixed frequency makes sense to
me if the goal is to optimize the cab's performance. If it's more for creatively shaping the low end, I see why one would want options. For me, it would be the former.

In this case I believe the goal is to quickly optimize the MVW loudspeaker for individual needs of the artist based on the inherent characteristics of the technology. The variable contour adjustment would be used to shape the bass response curve taking into account the non-linear nature of the MVW loudspeaker. This will allow rapid adjustment for room and cabinet output volume. Could this unit be used with other cabinets? Yes, the high pass would be useful. The contour would have to be trial and error. Mike antcipates having prototype circuitry to test in about a month. We will make it louder, faster, stronger: We will have the technology.Smile
